Purcell’s Dido
and Aeneas is
a masterpiece of opera in miniature. It contains
some of his most inspired writing from the swaggering
sailor chorus to the malevolent invocations of the
sorcerer. This is a special event with the role of
Dido being performed by one of our most accomplished
baroque specialists, Sally Anne Russell. This concert
also features music written in homage to Queen Mary. Come
all ye Sons of Art is
a splendid birthday ode full of swinging melodies
and brilliant trumpet flourishes. In sharp contrast,
the dark tones of trombones and drums herald the
news of the death of the queen in his heartfelt music
written for her funeral of 1682.
Conductor: Brett Weymark
Soloists: Sara Macliver, Anna Fraser, Sally-Anne Russell,
