First performed on Good Friday in Leipzig in 1720, Bach's passion setting of the gospel according to St Matthew is a drama of epic grandeur, the most noble and inspired treatment of its subject in the entire classical repertory. Having been described as one of the greatest achievements in western art music, no other work comes close to capturing both the dramatic power and poetic philosophy of this universal narrative. It is a timeless masterwork.
