“Everything will pass and the world will perish,
but the Ninth Symphony will remain.”

– Mikhail Bakunin

Conductor: Brett Weymark
Soloists: Leanne Kenneally, Fiona Janes,Jason Wasley and José Carbó
Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and Orchestra

The opening concert of Sydney Philharmonia Choir’s 90th anniversary season will begin with a world premiere from a distinctive Australian composer and climax with one of the most beloved pieces in the History of Western music, Beethoven’s Symphony No.9.

I’d like to name them all by name: Anna Akhmatova's Requiem is composer Moya Henderson’s tribute to poet Anna Akhmatova and the women of Stalin’s Russia who stood outside the Kresty prison for 17 months, hoping for some words about their loved ones.

Bridging the gap between the concert’s beginning and end will be three mystery pieces. The questions asked in the musical themes of these short works will be answered in the rousing finale: the 4th movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No.9.

Composed between 1817 and 1823, when secret police, informers, spies and bureaucrats hostile to art and freedom ranged through Vienna, the Ninth Symphony has become a global symbol of liberty, head in circumstances ranging from Tiananmen Square to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Join Sydney Philharmonia Choirs for Ode to Liberty, a diverse daring and divine concert experience.
