Agnus Dei by Samuel Barber
(choral version of Adagio for Strings)
Audio kindly supplied by Universal Music
For the last two years we have enjoyed an a cappella choral journey through our pilgrimage programs. First Spain, then England and this year, America.
What a lot of people don't realise is that America has one of the most vibrant and varied choral traditions on the planet, with more people singing in choirs than playing sport.
We have listened to literally hundreds of works to find the ones we want to sing for you in this program. Not only is the music sublime, it also touches on many themes that shape America today.
From Samuel Barber's stirring Agnus Dei (the vocal arrangement for Adagio for Strings) to the contemplative L'Invitation au Voyage by John Corigliano, this concert will surprise you in its beauty and variety.
Other composers featured include Dominic Argento, Morten Lauridsen and David Conte.
The concert concludes with the four Mail Order Madrigals by William Schumann: advice to young ladies that no-one
should miss!
Grab your musical passport and come with us.
