Bach never wrote an opera but his passion settings are such perfect dramatic realisations of the gospels that even Wagner referred to them when writing his great music dramas.
Bach's setting of the passion according to St John is the perfect work of art in which the text is enlarged and illuminated by the masterful musical setting.
First performed in Leipzig in 1724 on Good Friday, the impact of the work is immediate and arresting. Few of us make it through a performance of this work without being deeply moved by Bach's devotion and humanity.
With the combined forces of our Chamber Singers and the Symphony Chorus, we look forward to unlocking this work
of genius.
Sung in German with Paul McMahon as the Evangelist, this is the perfect way to celebrate Holy Week.
