In the heart of stillness, sound. Full, deep sound. Music of light in shadow. Visions of beauty – visions of the divine.
Two composers, searching for meaning in a modern world: two radiant Mass settings, glowing with golden warmth. Frank Martin draws on the timeless treasures of Gregorian chant in his Mass for Double Choir, one of the 20th century’s greatest works for unaccompanied voices. From Finland, Einojuhani Rautavaara offers a musical and spiritual journey through a soundscape of rich Romantic harmonies in his Missa a cappella, never before heard in Australia. Drink in the heavenly choral sound!
Rautavaara is a mystic with a special passion for angels. His music overflows with ecstasy, solo lines of transcendent purity rising out of luscious musical landscapes in which life itself seems to take its first breaths. ‘It is my belief,’ he says, ‘that music is great if, at some moment, the listener catches a glimpse of eternity through the window of time.’
The Swiss composer Frank Martin wrote his Mass around 1922, but it lay unperformed for forty years: ‘I saw it then as a matter between me and God.’ This sublime music looks inward to the heart, even as it fills the hall with resplendent sound.
